Help! Im In Housewife Heck!

OK! So here's the short version of events. This week my broom broke and now I don't have a broom. So I can't sweep or mop my kitchen floor. And my vacuum cleaner won't pick up anything since I vacuumed up a clothes pin. So I can't use that. The hubby says to leave it alone till his day off and he will fix it. So what do I clean with until then? My mop is missing a handle. Or else, I'd use that to sweep. Any ideas on how to get the dirt off the floor? Suggestions welcome!

beautyqueen well my suggestion is to do what your husband suggested leave it alone til his day off and he will'fix it. anyone complains tell them you gave the maid a day off' but she will be back tomorrow lol oneor two days of dirt on the floor wont kill anyone lol. [Hatley]

What were you doing to that broom? Flying to low, or what? LMAO I guess you won't get to clean anything since all your stuff is broken. Suppose you'll have to spend more time here and less time cleaning happy [fwidman]
Hey! Not a bad idea! lol [beautyqueen26]

I don't have a working vacuum either. The top part of the handle of my broom keeps coming off too. Makes it a bit difficult. That broom isn't that old either. Maybe a dust rag. Just dry dust the floor. I do that on my stairs that go to the second floor. I have used rags to mop my bathroom floor before. If you don't want to get down on your knees just stand on a couple rags and push them around with your feet. [Ruthep]
Good news. Take advantage of your kid wanting to help. Soon enough it will be work and she'll never want to do it. Speaking of duct tape the King used duct tape to hold the sump pump hose into the pipe drain. Quite a piece of work. Needless to say when we bought the house from him we also inherited that ingenious plumbing job. He popped out one of the end pieces of pipe, stuck the hose in and duct taped the he11 out of it so the pipe wouldn't leak. [Ruthep]

You are in a pickle. The only thing I can think of, Is using the dustpan and brush. That would mean getting down on your knees though. Or you can have a loan of my broom, It is a bit bent from where I crashed but still works fine. [Goodie123]
I sent my broom over for you to use. Oh No you have been out and about flying on my broom. LOL [Goodie123]

Well you could always just ignore until your hubby gets round to fixing or get down on hands and knees and do with a dustpan and brush. My mop broke funnily enough last week so all I done was change handles with the broom swept and changed back and then mopped. I have now bought a new one. Ellie :D [ellie333]
Isn't it ironic how all of us are syncing up online? That is so funny. Also ironically, our local grocery store has brooms and dust pans on sale this week till Tuesday Buy one get one free! Ironic, huh? My hubby thought so! He thinks I planned the broom thing. lollollol [beautyqueen26]

I use a wet rag to remove the dirt. I do this by adding clorox and sop on a basin and use it to wipe the floor. After this is wipe away the soap. The I apply floorwax and later buff it to shine! presto, a clean floor! [everlasting]

Hi beautyqueen. I guess, you'll have to do it by hand. What I usually do, whenever this happens to me is to get a wet rag and wipe the floor by hand or you can scrub by your feet. Goodluck! HUGZ! [dhangski]

Sometimes things just doesn't work our way. On emergency cases like that i would use my old worn out cloths and use it to sweep the floor. It is time consuming though but it does function like a 'new broom' You have to squat down when sweeping away the dust. [zandi458]

You are in a bit of a bind LOL, the only thing I can think of is use your hands or something. I have done that before when I did not have a hoover and I broke my broom. It is horrible when things break. [gemini_rose]

coming from a third world country that would not worry me a bit. just use a duster and a bucket full of water where you wipe the dust and rinse. good cleaning day [kaesta]

Hmm- what a pickle. Well I normally mop with a cloth on hands and knees anyways, but you can't do that without being able to sweep, unless you don't mind the crumbs and dust you'll pick up. I'd say just run to the store and pick up a cheapo broom so you can at least sweep, you could also sweep the carpet until your vacuum is fixed. [katsmeow1213]

If it's anything that needs urgent cleaning, I'd use a wet cloth and wipe with my hands. If not, I'd leave it till husband does what he promised which in my husband's case might take quite a while:P [SViswan]

well, what is wrong with the broom? Did the handle break? Tape it back together with some serious duct tape, for the time being, that happened to mine, too, and my vacuum stopped working too, so I understand how you feel, if that isnt the case then, you could always do it the old fashioned way, and get the dirt up with a damp towel. Or why dont you ask to borrow your neighbors broom for a couple of minutes. =) [stacyv81]

Hi beautyqueen, With your name like that you shouldn't be cleaning at all he he. Get a damp clothe and down your knees and wipe and wet sponge to clean your carpet, I have to do that sometimes. Don't work too hard, put your feet up soon. Good luck. Tamara [tamarafireheart]

Hmm-mmm I guess you could borrow a broom from somebody if the dirty floor is making you crazy. I sometimes use a dustbuster to clean floors. Do you have anythingn like that? We seem to have lots of cleaning implements around here. You would think we would have a cleaner house!! We have 2 brooms, mop, lysol hot cleaner, dust buster, steam vac, shop vac, regular vac, various scrubbers dust pan of course and a handheld carpet cleaner. [snowy22315]

Short of getting on your hands and knees with a wet cloth, I dont know what to tell you. Maybe you can go and buy a dust mop until your vaccum is fixed or just go and buy another broom. [RDugas]

Grrrr... I'd go crazy- I suggest you go to the nearest store and pick up a new broom. I can't think of anything to take it's place besides a vacuum. My vacuum has been throwing things out the back side of it for months- It drives me crazy- It picks up the stuff then throws some back out! I sweep my floor daily and I'd be going crazy without being able to. [KrisNY]
That is great then! 2 brooms--- so now you won't be without one :) I have had terrible luck with vacuum cleaners- I switched to bagless and ever since- I've had bad luck! I'm buying a new one each year! I'm thinking Dyson this year! [KrisNY]

I say that you take a break and spend more time here to make some extra money to help buy a new vacuum. I would try to do it by hand as I hate for the floor to be dirty. However, it would be nice to have a break from housework so I would try to get by until it is fixed. [carolscash]

Hmmm..... hire someone with their own cleaning supplies to come in and do it until all o yours are fixed!!! I'd loe to be in your position because I don't have the money o hire someone, so I'd have the perfect excuse to just leae it alone. haha I I had the money to hire someone, I'd have a excuse since my supplies would be roken. LOL See the advanages in everything! [danishcanadian]

Well why not use that good old rag in your house and manually wipe your house clean in the meantime that you don't have the broom or your vacuum is not working well. Or you may want to tinker your vacuum maybe its just full of dust inside and needs just cleaning from the inside. maybe learning some new skills inside is much better than waiting for your husband to do things for you. [rsa101]

Well I can not think of anything to tell you to use, maybe ask your neighbor to borrow her broom until you can get another onelolmy neighbor is my mom so that would work for me.You have a great night and good luck on getting your floor cleaned. [bfarrier1]

Ever thought about getting a new broom? I mean is this really a big deal? How hard can this be? This may sound crazy but how do you vacuum up a clothes pin. Do you not pick up "big" items before starting? Or even better how do you break a broom? This is really funny..... [relundad]
When was this discussion posted? Around midnight last night? Couldn't really leave my kid at home alone and run to the Walmart for a new broom, while my spouse was at work. But I'm sure you figured that one out for yourself. [beautyqueen26]

I hope your husband fixes the vaccum cleaner soon. I hope things get better for you. [Shaun72]
That has to be hard. Hopefully whenyour husband is off of work you will get time to go and get a broom. [Shaun72]

I would wait for him to fix the vacuum cleaner since he said he would do it. In the meantime I would go to the local Dollar store and buy a broom for a dollar. That should work just fine until your vacuum cleaner is up and running again! Or just be lazy for a few days until it is his day off to fix it! lol [schulzie]

Sorry beautyqueen but I had a good giggle at your situation... I so needed it though but didn't mean for it to be at your expense!! The only suggestion I have would be to put on some knee pads and get down on the floor with a pan of cleaning water mixture and a tough old rag and do it by hand. It's not going to be easy but it's the only way I can think of doing such a job when you have nothing else. [CatsandDogs]

Do you have ANYTHING? Like a dustbuster? A shop vac in the garage? A swiffer? A neighbor with one of the above? LOL! If it was a matter of just the mopping, I'd use a sponge or a rag if I couldn't mop. I guess it depends on how much floor we're talking about. In a pinch, get a kitchen towel damp and then use your feet to shove it around, after this it'll be easier to use a rag or something once you get the crumbs and the worst of it up. I picked this up from my best friend, she Mops her floor that way all the time. I'm more of the sweep and then mop type, but I've been lazy and didn't do either one today. [mommyboo]
Well you can't complain, then? Can you? A job doesn't get done without at least one willing participant. [beautyqueen26]

blink I guess it is hands and knees time, beauty. I think the universe is trying to tell you that you need to lighten up a bit with the house work. Do you have any of those swifter cloths? They work well on floors in a pinch. [makingpots]

lolwell i guess you have to buy another new broom but if its not possible then try borrowing to neighbors which i presumed are your friends and explain your predicament. [vanities]

I would do what many has said - dry dust. Or get down and mop it up with a damp rag. Although I do like the idea of ignoring it until hubby can fix the broom. You probably need more time to relax anyway, right?? Hope you can get your broom fixed soon. [Virgie60]

The only thing I can think of is to go to the dollar store and get a cheap swiffer or down on your hands and knees with a damp cloth I am afraid! either that or persuade hubby to get to the job quicker! xxx [mummymo]

You could use a rag and sweep it up like you would sweep crumbs from the table. By the way, I feel for ya! my dust pan of all things broke! [laglen]

If I were in your shoes, i'd retire back to bed with a good book, happy in the knowledge that I have the perfect excuse for not doing the housework rasp [GreenMoo]

Hey! Stick a slightly damped washcloth on the end of the broken broom handle and use it like a swiffer. [1grnthmb]

If it were me, I'd take the end of the broom and and make myself small and sweep. then I'd take a rag and a bucket of hot sudsy water and make myself even smaller and scrub the floor. If I vaccumed a clothes pin, I'd take the vacuum apart and get the darn clothespin out of the hose by shaking it and beating it on the ground...unlodged things caught in vaccums many times. Take something and drop it thru the hose to push out whats there if all else fails. Beauty...you can do this. [sid556]

In the olden days. people didn't have brooms or mops, I think. I think that people used to clean their floors by going on their hands and knees and using a cloth, wipe up the messes. So if my broom was broken and I had no other way of cleaning my kitchen floor, I would be on my hands and knees and clean it. It doesn't take all that long and isn't all that hard to do, so that is what I would do. I have done it in the past. [chrislotz]
