My household subscribes to 2 newspapers so I get a double dose of news each day. Sometimes, I will also pop by google/yahoo news to catch more of what's happening.
Then it makes me wonder when I look at my own focus. Which area of the newspaper do I linger longer?
I find that unless the matters of global import are extremely significant, my concentration would be given over more to local news or just Entertainment gossip (lol). So if you follow this line of logic, it means that I care more about what happens here... than there.
Are you like me where you care more of what happens locally then internationally? Or are you like a hawk that looks over the entire Earth? Do you even care about what happens elsewhere? Are you actually totally not bothered with news at all? Do share your thoughts. ;-)

responses and comments:
Yes, of course I do because I know that we are all connected! [liperoterachel]
Guess you are right in a way! :P [lordwarwizard]
Your on a roll today aren't you :P I try to keep tabs of the local news around our area and county by watching the news at 5pm everyday. They usually televise whats happening internationally as well. I usually pick up the local newspaper when I go via metro as they are free. Now and then I will look online at some New Zealand sites and Samoan news too just to see what is happening there. I just heard right now a stabbing that happened downtown chinatown, we go there regularly to watch Movies - so much happening out our way it gets depressing. [maddysmommy]
Yup! This is my current record - 6 discussions in a day. I've never posted so many ever. :P People should start behaving.. :( [lordwarwizard]
Well it is a bit difficult to answer, and that is because in israel the local does base on the international news. I will give you an example: the whole security situation which is local news always relays on the international news. So i can tell you that i do always like to know what is happening in the world and how does it influence israel and other countries in the near future. [liranlgo]
I have to say I would rather hear what is happening more where I live than other places, I know when I go on vacation somewhere and the television is on I don't really pay attention to what is happening where I am, in fact, most times I try to see what the weather is like at home and what, if anything, is going on in my area. Although like you, I do read the news in various places everyday, it might be of interest to me, but only for a brief moment, the then and now I look for where I live. [texasclassygal]
Yea, like for me, somehow foreign news just feel... foreign. :P [lordwarwizard]
Yes, of course I am interested in what happens in the world. I live in Europe. Politics are very important. Changes are coming constantly, we are being ruled more and more by Brussels, unfortunately. The whole world is interesting. It takes less than a day by plane and I can be in Australia for example. On the other hand it does not interest me at all if Britney drinks again or how long that Hilton woman is in jail. These people are not important. [Inky261]
I guess for your case, certain things just catch your eye more. ;-) [lordwarwizard]
These days I'm deliberately avoiding "bad news at my door steps".I am doing it because daily news, crimes, political turmoils ,etc.do bother me a lot.And since I'm on a vacation I don't want to spoil my mood. I am not reading, hearing ,watching news ,local or international. But most of the time I catch myself browsing thorugh interesting articles on scientific discoveries, new researches...some page3 gossips too if they are related with Jolie or Keanu!!:D I am happy to be "a toad in the hole" temporarily only;) [sera21]
Yes i am concerned abt things happening in the world.I want peace to reign all over the world [happy4life]
Peace... is a difficult word. [lordwarwizard]
I certainly do, that is why I really regret that there was not much response to my discussion titled "Headlines" asking what was happening where they live/ [Modestah]
Check out google news at http://news.google.com.sg . And if you scroll down, there are headlines and news reports for many countries there. I think you would like it since you want to know what's happening elsewhere. ;-) [lordwarwizard]
I care more about what happens in my own neck of the woods. And most of the time, I have no control over what happens right in my own neighborhood. But whatever might happen is far more likely to have an affect on me. Yes, I care about what happens in the rest of the world, but there is little I can do when something does happen. There are simply too many things happening at any one time. And I cannot feel sorry enough to make a difference about anything. No one can for that matter. Forgive me, but I hardly ever watch or pay attention to the news. I don't care for all the negativity and gossip. All that is meaningless. I don't like many of the things going on in the world, but I feel like it is the choice of the people involved to make decisions for themselves. I wish I had the power to help people all over the world, but I don't. Someday, I might be able to make a real difference somewhere. [sigma77]
Yup, it is unavoidable that what happens locally will have a more immediate effect to you. [lordwarwizard]
I probably sound like a selfish wolfie but I have enough problems on my plate without worrying about what goes on in the world, if we thought about it we wouldn't sleep at night worrying about the famine, war, killing, drugs, you name it, papers only print bad news anyhow and it's depressing enough life without adding more to it! No I like to be blissfully ignorant, makes me sound like an ostrich don't it instead of a wolf sticking his head in the sand! [wolfie34]
I perfectly understand what you mean. It's like - let me sort out my problems first before you try to burden me with yours. :P [lordwarwizard]
Sure I do. I just don't like hearing about it all the time, we always have news up dates even months after. It's bad but I don't want reminding all the time, it's to annoying. ~Joey [joey_matthews]
Yea, I know what you mean.. [lordwarwizard]
Oh I care! We watch the news every night and we always wanted to kow whats going on around the world andwe keep up of whats going on. [aprilgrl]
Alright, turn on your radar eyes always hehe. :P [lordwarwizard]
Well I'm not so much reader or care about news! but I do subsribes for local and international news also for my husband because he likes to know about what happen in this world. Ha!ha!ha! I try to care but I realize I can't keep'up! so it didn't bother me now! anyway no headache to feel whats going in my town. (LC) [subrecary]
Ignorance is bliss... yet sometimes it's nice to know things. ;-) [lordwarwizard]
Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.... I don't subscribe to any newspapers, and to those that call me wanting me to subscribe to a newspaper, I tell them no, if I want one, I'll get it when I go to the store..... I read what's going on from mylots homepage, adn from there I caqn find jsut about anything... Mooch [oneandonemakesix]
Oh yea, you are quite right there. Headlines will be duplicated here hehe. :P [lordwarwizard]
I think important international news interests me but it is only natural that we are concerned first and foremost on what is happening locally! Sometimes local news is overshadowed by what is happening elsewhere in the world and that is as it should be. As local news affects us more directly it is only natural that this is the area that interests us most! xxxx [mummymo]
You are right. What happens locally is definitely more of immediate concern. ;-) [lordwarwizard]
Hello Lordwarwizard, I'm a news junkie. I monitor what's going on as much as possible. My priorities are: State, National, International. I don't pay too much attention to what's going on locally, because where I live, we watch the grass grow for entertainment (lol). I like to peruse the international wires via the "Drudgereport". This way, I can access news from all around the world, via local papers. I certainly don't have time to read everything, everyday -- but I try to hit the hot spots of the Middle East, Russia, and Venezuela, on a regular basis. This is a small world, and getting smaller everyday. Because of international trade, international currency investments, international interdependence on resources, etc... So, what goes on across the pond has more of an effect on our lives today, than ever before in history. So, although I'd love to return to the days of blissful ignorance, I don't see it happening anytime soon. [ladyluna]
My lady, please call me wizzy. :P And yes, I think it is termed the butterfly effect. Is it not? ;-) [lordwarwizard]
Your right I watch mostly local news even National , I will watch what goes on in afganistan as i have a family friend ststioned there . Other than that I am a local newsbody LOL LOL !!! [keepermykitty]
You must be a current affairs whiz then! ;-) [lordwarwizard]
What happens elsewhere in the world that would affect our community is what gets my attention. It is some sort of a precaution on what to do in the near or immediate future. There are some issues between countries and religions that might indirectly affect us, but most are beyond our control. For news, I am more interested on Sports that I like, not locally though (lol). I guess I am like you more concerned on what's happening locally. It's like walking, you get tripped by an object on your next step while you're looking too far ahead. Knowing what's happening internationally but not knowing about events in your own vicinity. [rbnstr08]
Well, staying informed is good. ;-) [lordwarwizard]
Hi wizard, Yes I do care, and I do read about what's happening in the world. Here if it makes the news from other parts of the nation, or world, it's usually tragic, or devastating. To read about so much pain of others gets me down, so I end up focusing on local stuff. I was thinking the other day about how I think I'm becoming kind of numb, about bombing & killings, terrorists acts of violence, I shouldn't be that way, but hate reading it all the time. Need good news sometimes :) [Heavensent53]
I do agree. Bad news are not all that heartening to be with... [lordwarwizard]
Most of the time, I donīt pay too much attention to the news, although I do check in about once a week. My husband is a vorocious newspaper reader, he reads two or three different ones a day, so anything interesting or shocking, he will tell me about it. That is local news. I watch CNN to catch the US news and check the MSN CA website occasionally to find out what is going on in Canada, which is where I am originally from. Apart from that, I donīt pay much attention. I donīt check world news unless it pops up in one of the three areas above. [GuateMom]
He can go for those pyramid game or who wants to be a millionaire kinda gameshows. ^^ [lordwarwizard]
I have always been curious about what news is happening in other parts of the world. Of course being American,I am mostly worried about what's happening here but I am also concerned about what happens in other countries. [66jerseygirl]
I am very interested in local, as in State news, & just as interested in World news. This must be obvious by my discussions, as I am unable to completely stop posting discussions of world events, or Australian news. I am not in the slightest bit interested in the gossip pages. I really devour the news section, which is usually only the first few pages. Some newspapers have a cooking section , or gardening, which sometimes interest me. [jennybianca]
Yes yes, I can see that - from the nature of the discussions you start hehe. :P [lordwarwizard]
Yup. I do care a lot. I know that what had happened on the other side of the earth will also affects us. And who knows, it may also happend to us personally. [Megzzz]
Yea. Butterfly effect. ^^ [lordwarwizard]
hawk??? that's amusing. well I am contnt with one newspaper and I do keep up with news on T.V national and International both. I am not a news addict or a hawk but do keep up with whats happening around. I do get disturbed with disastrous news anywhere in the world and sometimes follow it in quite a detail too. Entertainment gossip is one which I rarely follow but yes other stuff I do keep a track of.I can not make up my mind where do I fit in all this description but here are my reading habits for you. [mansha]
I rather read about good news. ^^ [lordwarwizard]
I do care about things that are happening all over the world, but there are certain things that I do and dont read. I tend to stay away from entertainment news because it is all so disgusting that I don't even like to hear about it. And I also stay away from politics. I dont vote and I dont much care about them, as horrible as that sounds. But I like to know about local stuff, and state stuff. That is what is most important to me. [kfrisk]
Well, they are really just for entertainment but yes, not all like it. :P [lordwarwizard]
I always read national and international news because I like to know what's going on, whether it directly affects me or not, and also so I can better interpret whether what I hear from my government is true or whether they're just blowing a smokescreen to serve their own interests. [Idlewild]
Well, I'm not really into politics, but it affects all the things that happen elsewhere... like how much aid money is given to which countries, what economic and environmental policies governments support and why, etc. So the politics is tied into world events, it's kind of unavoidable. [Idlewild]
Well the news is everywhere we look pretty much these days. You really can't hide from it unless you don't have a radio, tv, paper, magazines, internet etc.. So I really can help but care about what is going on in the world. :) I listen to both international and local new really. However I must admit that I think the local news if there is anything of interest is what I pay the closest attention to because it affects me most/more directly but I like to know what is happening everywhere. [cherbe]
Oh yea. You can't hide. You can't hide. You can't hide. [lordwarwizard]
It's natural to be most interested in what's happening nearby, it's fun to read gossip at any distance, and it's imperative to know what's happening in the wider world to keep a proper perspective on life. Interesting, now that you've made me think about it. I get my local news from TV first, then the web, then the newspaper if there's something in particular I want. National, from the web, then TV, seldom the Paper unless something really big happened. International news, from the web almost exclusively, except for the stuff Charlie Gibson covers at 6:30 pm. I look at the news at all levels, from town to globe. It's imperative to stay informed, so I can figure out who's going to screw me over next. I'm also a regular voter, even in the off years, and I like to make informed decisions. I know who owns the newspapers I read, who the domains are registered to on my fav news sites, whether I'm reading a news story or an op-ed piece. Call me a cynic, and I'll tell you that a cynic is nothing more than an educated optimist! I know, I'm weird, but you asked.....! [gardengrrl]
Oh, for me, I seldom tune in to the TV for news. I also read my papers and the occasional online ones. And when I read, I read my papers in the order presented (since I am going to read all anyway lol) - highlights, global, home, finance and life. :) [lordwarwizard]
Well for me, I don't like my head in the sand like an Ostrich. I think everyone should keep on top of what is going on around them, but in other states, and countries as well. It first of all is interesting how views differ from each state in the US. I am an observer and so I like to know what is going on, and I always feel like I have an open mind to learning new things, and expanding my knowledge, and understanding. Learning about others, and knowing what is going on where they are at, hopefully will solve intolerance on both ends. [crickethear]
Yup. Good to stay in the know. ^^ [lordwarwizard]
I watch Sky and CNN in the mornings religiously, and I have alerts set up from CNN, that covers all my interests, which I receive daily into my mailbox. It is only the headlines and should I want to know more, then it is linked to the 'full story' web page. I receive a weekly local newspaper, delivered to my house, but I prefer international news. [Anniedup]
Cool. So you are all connected now. ;-) [lordwarwizard]
yes i realy do care wat happens elsewhere .if its badthingh i do not like them and want to hit aslap to the baddoers if i cud .and if its a good thingh i appretes them. [knightking_world]
Our newspapers here are quite local and very little International news gets in it. I try to keep updated on the happenings in the world, but noton a regular basis. I figure if it's really important it will be on the news stations, etc. My hubby is from another country, so we tend to keep up to date on what is going on with that country as well. I do care what happens globally, but with my job being what it is, most of what I deal with is on a local level. If there was something of great importance nationally, I would hear about it rather quickly. [misheleen73]
Yup, if something is really BIG, then it will definitely filter down to local level. [lordwarwizard]
Of course, I am also subscribing for 2 newspapers and also get all the newspaper and magazines in my office. I go through all the news local as well as international. My job is such I have to keep all the information regarding the worldly affairs. I read thoroughly business news. [navtech]
Don't get overdosed. :P [lordwarwizard]
I do care about what happens elsewhere as I am concerned about the world in general and what is happening, especially global warming. Most things that happen elsewhere could possibly happen here at some point so I do take some interest in what is happening in other parts of the world. I pay more attention to the local news and sports and stuff but I do keep an eye out on the rest of the world. [kgwat70]
Right... all connected ultimately. [lordwarwizard]
I only watch local news, I don't get newspapers and I don't really want to know what's going on in other places, there's enough rubbish to deal with in this country. [nannacroc]
ROFL!! Well said haha! [lordwarwizard]
ya, If I have free time, maybe I care about something elsewhere. but if I am busy with the bothering issues in my job, I care about nothing, even local news. To be frank, sometimes, I care more about entertainment gossip than some Political news. lol! I am a simple person. I mean, I don't wanna be bothered by complicated issues. I always try to make me feel easy. so I prefer the entertainment gossip! have a great day! [maximus2006]
That's fair enough. ^^ [lordwarwizard]
I care every things around mr including local and international.Always read news from all sources.Internet,TV,Newspapers, radio etc are favorite for my news collection.I bother more about the global matters rather than local matters. [rkbehera1]
Quite rare among myLotters! ^^ [lordwarwizard]
Hello, wizard,i do really care what happen in the other parts of the world,i always read newspaper to keep myself well informed with what is happening in other countries. Not only in the headline news,i will always read finance, sports news.Literally,I have a lot of interests. It is very interesting to know more things from different countries and you will be more open minded when times go by. [easy888]
To be very honest with you, there is always so much happening in my country that I cannot keep up. But I do care about what is happening in my community and try to get involved in assisting the homeless and the needy. Then my concentration goes more to the rest of the country, firstly the places where i have family living and then elsewhere. As far as international goes, I care first about the areas where I have friends and family living and then elsewhere... I guess I seem to prioritize which places I care about first. I like sport news and so I follow that regardless of which country it is. As for the gossip and stuff, that I get from all the youngsters at work and so I stay on top of all of that in this way. And so that is basically me and my happenings elsewhere! [Lucille7]
That's quite a bit! :) [lordwarwizard]
i like to read international news anytime and in fact my favorite page on a regular newspaper is international page!:) but it doesn't mean i avoid local news it's just they make me more depressed because they usually show violent side of human nature (i mean by everyday increasing incidents of criminal nature)... [kaplya]
I think that I am more interested on whats gong on in my own country since it is affecting ME - however I do also read and lisetn to other new and the tragedies effects me just as much. reading about a baby beeing murdered or something like that - I dont care WHERE it happened, just that it did! [Marie2473]
Quite... only understandable. ^^ [lordwarwizard]
yeah...if it is something that is interesting to me or something which helps me...otherwise im sorry to say..im a real selfabsorbed guy [pradoz]
I'm not a news type of person. I may watch it once in awhile by choice, but I usually watch it when my partner turns it on. I'm not into reading the paper except for the ads, and I seldom like to read the Police Beat section. One could say I don't care about the news, but that's not it. I am affected by what goes on around the world, which is why I don't like the news. Natural disasters really get me weepy. It makes me feel like I'm a neighbor to those affected. [TheCatzMeow1]
Yes, I know what you mean. [lordwarwizard]
Yes I do. Ultimately what happens elsewhere in the world will affect us all. whether it is global warming or terrorism or the price of oil, it will make a difference in the world. [jillmalitz]
Yup, butterfly effect. ^^ [lordwarwizard]
Hmm, a double-edged sword, this one. Yes, I care what happens to others far away, because I too believe in the web of life here on earth. However, in practice I am usually woefuly behind on current events, local and global. My life gets hectic and news watching or reading gets shoved to a back burner. During those times it almost has to fall on my head for me to notice. I try to do the headlines here and on my local paper's website at least once a week. I glance at papers when they are around me. I have an advantage on the local news in that I have a really gossipy neighbor. One fifteen minute visit, and I know everything there is to know hereabouts lol. The town near me is small and gossip and news are main courses at every shop and restaurant. If much is afoot I will hear about it when doing my normal activities. Much of my news attention is filtered through my 'worry about what you can affect, not about what you cannot change'. I spend more time on issues where I feel I can have some impact, even if small. I could easily go without the news for my own sake, and have done so before. I am no news junkie. It affects my daily life little whether I have read the news or not. [wdkptr]
That's cool! Just keep your gossipy neighbor at hand and you will be kept very informed. ;-) _______________ |@@@@| |####| |@@@@| |####| |@@@@| |####| \@@@@| |####/ \@@@| |###/ `@@|_____|##' (O) .-'''''-. .' * * * `. : * * : : ~ A S C I I ~ : : ~ A W A R D ~ : : * * : jgs `. * * * .' `-.....-' [lordwarwizard]
if its some big event I would care but not these other little things. Like what did Paris Hilton eat for lunch today. No thank you. I do listen to the local news sometimes although not always. News to me is just boring anymore. [mssnow]
Who cares about Paris anyway? I think her dog is more important. ROFL!! :P [lordwarwizard]
I'm like you. But I think it's because there is so much going here right now. Not only in the US, but in my own state of south carolina. It's not that I don't have the interest of what is happening in the rest of the world, it's just how much news can I absorb. How much of the death and destruction can I take in Iraq, Israel and other places in the mid east. Right now it's about local stuff. We just lost 9 fire fighters in the biggest fire disaster since 9/11. And our state treasurer was just busted for possesion of cocaine with the intent to sell. So I too find my eye wandering to Celebrity gossip. Need something 'non news worthy' to take my mind off of everything else! [nicolec]
Yup, I think I know what you mean. One can have an overdose. :P And relaxing a bit on entertainment news is ALRIGHT. ;-) [lordwarwizard]
Well I like to think I'm a fairly international person, so I do always read the international news, and try to learn about what is happening all over the world. Having said that, I guess I have to admit that my focus of interest is very much Europe, as opposed to the USA or anywhere else, and when I am out of the UK, I always try to find my news through BBC World or Sky News because they focus on Europe first and foremost before looking elsewhere. If I ever turn on CNN it drives me crazy, because their news is so USA focussed that they seem to act as though America is the only place in the world! Because my partner is from Argentina, I do tend to get a more international view of the world news anyway, because he reads the Argentine newspapers online every day, and also has Spanish language newspapers delivered. [rosie_123]
Yea, we all have our favorites. ;-) [lordwarwizard]
I suppose that I care more about what happens nearby because it is more likely to affect me and my family. To be honest, I don't subscribe to any newspaper, and rarely watch the news. I sometimes get news online and sometimes a friend will let me know about something and then I will watch the news for details. If I am looking online or reading a newspaper, I will usually skim headlines for articles of interest. If something catches my eye, it may be local or elsewhere, but usually the local matters are more likely to catch my attention. [kelly60]
Yea, you are nearer to the "epicenter" so to speak. :P [lordwarwizard]
I do not even read the one set of papers I had at home. I flip only if I have time while taking breakfast. The only section I spent longer time would be the forum pages and the finance portion, or perhaps some juicy stories. I am more concerned with local policies that will affect me. What happens internationally or politically, it doesn't seem to bother me. Perhaps because it is beyond my reach and I am nobody to be able to make any influence. I do not care about what happens elsewhere or internationally, to a certain extent locally unless it affects me. [whyaskq]
Maybe you need to wake up earlier to enjoy the paper you paid for. :P [lordwarwizard]
yes i care. People should care about others too :( When a natural disaster hits some country its always in the news and i do care for the people injured, home lost, deaths etc. So ya and it should be in the nature of human being to care for all [Deathknight_31]
The headlines are displayed on the front page usually so they are quite hard to miss.. [lordwarwizard]
Sounds like you care even more than I do. I'm more interested in human interest than "news." [ElicBxn]
About your friends then... [lordwarwizard]
I lived in NY, Miami and live Chicago, am interested in Buenos Aires, _Santiago and Guayaquil and always read newspapets about those cities. [jahvo6]
More "local" areas then. ^^ [lordwarwizard]
I read the newspaper daily- I have to admit I go right to local and then the Living (comics) and sports- But I do read CNN , MSNBC, and ESPN daily- online- So I'm concerned with what is happening outside my local area- but I get that news online- I think it is better there then in our paper- [KrisNY]
Most people are just the same too. :P [lordwarwizard]
I don't have a political bone in my body so that rules out anything in that sphere. Regional news and weather is more my thing but I'm definitely not a news junkie. I prefer current affairs to news if i'm watching on TV. Entertainment news is not my thing...it's not like I know any entertainers...most folk I know are on first name terms with really famous stars. Strange really. [MsTickle]
Oh yes, politics can be so stupid.. [lordwarwizard]
I do care but most of the time Im very sad that I cant do much for those things.I cant help them in anyways at my level. But once I get settled with a job and all,I may be able to do something for it. [ackars]
I feel the same.. [lordwarwizard]
I hardly ever read a newpaper anymore and the news on TV is quite gloomy. There are plenty of discussions about the things that have happened day to day in the world and some of them are before the new reports them so I don't think I miss hearing them just by not watching or reading. I do care what happens all over though. [mihimolly]
All the more you should read the entertainment news to relax lol. :P [lordwarwizard]
Actually I'm not bothered about the news around not locally and not internationally. But sometime if something interesting happens, i'm very interested in watching on television. [magnel]
I tend to check the news online rather thanin the paper, but I do check out the global news. I am very interested in what happens around the world, especially in my interests. We live in a global society now and it helps to keep up with what is happening all around us. [lillake]
Yea, all connected. [lordwarwizard]
I only care about it if it can came somehow to affect me. It's not politically correct to say it, I know, but that's what I think. "When short on wheat, my bread first." [eadward]
Makes perfect sense.:) [lordwarwizard]
Hey LW, I do watch the major news Networks & in our local paper I mainly read the stroller an article about hometown ppl but I have commercial a.d.d. if a commercial comes on I'll flip the channel or if the news starts to get I guess boring is the only word I can use to describe it.There is a saying "it's not a problem of society if it don't affect me" +'s 2 U :D [meme0907]
I sometimes look online to read my local paper or i go to the local news website on line. I hardly ever go to yahoo news sites to read into gossip about the tv stars. [Shaun72]
Whatever you fancy! ;) [lordwarwizard]
Well, it is not that I do not care about the world around me, I just do not have the time for it but when I can I like to know what is going on by reading the news online sometimes. [Lydia1901]
Lol... yes, I know what you mean.:P [lordwarwizard]
Yes, I care about what happens elsewhere. We have become a global society. What happens elsewhere will eventually affect us no matter where we live. I like CNN headline news on TV and I also watch the local news. [gberlin]
Yea, of course.. [lordwarwizard]
i mainly read my city's newspaper online every day to see what is happening where i live. i am not all that interested in other places but if i have the newspaper for other places then i will read it [lols189]
